The amount of books that are being read and the quality of the readings are measuring units that indicate a society’s level of development. But what would a society look like whose citizens are literally addicted to reading and a potential deprivation would produce a terrible withdrawal?

The play written by Vladimir Sorokin, one of Russia’s most important and provocative contemporary writers, presents characters who live with and through literature and whose very lives depend on the works they feed themselves with. When they are offered Dostoevsky’s „The Idiot“, their reality merges with the novel’s universe and the characters of „Dostoevsky Trip“ become in their turn characters in another story.

Vladimir Sorokin’s play investigates the nature of reality, the power of fiction and the way that the connection to some products of imagination can change our life. In other words, imagination is life. And the effect that literature can generate on us is beyond question.
